How Diamond Context works

Find the hidden MLB player. Every guess gets a similarity rank: #1 is the answer, #2 is the nearest other career, and a larger number is further away.

All searchable players have a recorded MLB appearance from 2010 onward. Similarity uses their complete recorded careers, including earlier seasons.

  1. Career teams: 45%. Shared clubs matter most. Longer stints count more than short visits.
  2. Position and role: 25%. The same primary position matches best; related outfield positions and two-way roles receive partial credit.
  3. Era: 15%. Overlapping playing seasons and similar birth years bring players closer.
  4. Birth country: 10%. Handedness: 5%. Matching birthplace country, batting side and throwing hand also contribute.

These weights produce a fixed ordering for each Daily. A rank is a place in that ordering, not a similarity percentage or a judgment of talent. Green ranks are 1–300, amber 301–900, and red 901 onward.

Guesses are unlimited. Hints reveal a closer player, starting at #300 or better and moving roughly halfway toward #1. They never reveal the answer and are counted separately. Your result is the number of guesses and hints used.

The Daily changes at midnight New York time. Progress is saved to your guest or signed-in account. Giving up reveals the player and ends your attempt. The seven released past Dailies are also playable.

Reveal the player and give up?

This ends your saved attempt and reveals #1. You can review your guesses, but you cannot restart this Daily.

How Diamond Context works

Diamond Context is a search through baseball careers. Every guess receives a fixed similarity rank relative to one hidden player. The answer is always number one. Lower ranks mean a closer career match, without revealing which individual characteristic matched.

How to play

  1. Choose an MLB player from search to establish a starting point. You can guess players who played in MLB from 2010 onward.
  2. Compare the new rank with your closest earlier guess. Try related careers, then change one feature at a time, such as primary position, club history or playing era.
  3. Use Get a closer hint when you need another direction. Continue until you guess number one, or give up to reveal the player and finish your saved attempt.

Scoring

Guesses are unlimited and there is no timer. Your result reports whether you solved the puzzle, how many guesses you made and how many hints you used. Hints are counted separately, always reveal a closer unseen player and never reveal the answer. Fewer guesses and hints give you a useful personal challenge.

Playing tips

Use your closest guess as a starting point, then explore players with a similar club history, position or playing era. If a new guess is farther away, return to the stronger lead and try another direction. Consider a player's whole career, including seasons before 2010, rather than only their final club.
